An invitation featuring the city of Melbourne coat-of-arms above, followed by the text, in English and French: 'WITH THE COMPLIMENTS OF/THE MELBOURNE INVITATION COMMITTEE/FOR OLYMPIC GAMES/1956', Invitation accompanied a prospectus published in 1949 by the Melbourne Invitation Committee, (with support from relevant societies, councils, local, state, and federal governments), for the I.O.C., proposing the city of Melbourne as the place to host the 1956 Games.
