Object Detail

Brief Description
Original Robert Ingpen watercolour depicting West Indian batsman, Frank Worrell (1924-1967). The artist's image number - 84 - and subject's name and team are handwritten below the design, with the pencilled years '1947-63'. A sheet of tracing paper, with grid lines and references, folds over the artwork which is signed and dated by the artist. The image is included in a tapestry celebrating 150 years of performances and events on the MCG. One of a trio of outstanding Barbadian batsmen - the three 'Ws' of Weekes, Worrell and Walcott - Worrell scored 3860 runs at an average of 49.98, and took 69 wickets, in 51 Tests. He was the first black man to captain the West Indies, and is credited, with Richie Benaud, as reinvigorating Test cricket during the West Indian tour of Australia (1960/61). On 11th February 1961, a record crowd of 90,800 spectators attended the MCG on the second day of the 5th Test, which Australia narrowly won.
