Object Detail
Brief Description
Original Robert Ingpen watercolour depicting Australian Rules footballer, David John McNamara (1887-1967). The artist's image number - 43 - and subject's name and club are handwritten below the design, with the pencilled year '1916'. A sheet of tracing paper, with grid lines and references, folds over the artwork which is signed and dated by the artist. The image is included in a tapestry celebrating 150 years of performances and events on the MCG. McNamara, a powerful centre half-forward, played 122 games for the St Kilda Football Club (1905-09,1914-15, 1918-19 and 1921-23). In 1923, one of his place-kicks was measured at 93 yards (85 metres). His place-kicking expertise brought shouts from the crowd to "put it on the carpet, Dave".
