Object Detail

Brief Description
Colour print of an early (c. 1740s) cricket match in progress. The bat is curved, the stumps consist of only two uprights and the bowler has just bowled underarm. The players are mostly wearing loose white shirts with tight pants, and there is a man with coat and hat sitting to the side, probably scoring. Taped to the back is a label reading "CRICKET AS PLAYED IN THE ARTILLERY GROUND, LONDON / Francis Hayman, circa 1743". It is under glass in a medium brown and gold frame with crackle pattern.
