Brief Description
Chromolithograph, full-length portrait of Charles Burgess Fry (athlete) against a blank background. Fry wears a white top and shorts with blue trim and black shoes, and is standing on grass and facing to his left as if ready to start running, with something clenched in each fist. Signature of Fry reproduced at bottom right; the pseudonym of the artist Leslie 'Spy' Ward printed above; the lithographers' studio at bottom left beneath image, Vincent Brooks, Day & Son'; the title of the series of which this print is one, "OXFORD ATHLETICS", published by the magazine Vanity Fair. Above the image at left is printed VANITY FAIR and at right the date APRIL 19 1894. Image seems to have been affixed to a thick brown card with verso "Set 7"; subsequently affixed to a white window mount with adhesive tape at the top with verso label, 'The Picture Factory' .
