Brief Description
Black pencil and grey wash sketch depicting half-length portrait of W G Grace. He is seated on an angle holding a document in both hands whilst looking out towards the viewer. Grace is wearing a dark jacket or coat with a buttoned garment beneath. The work is bordered by a single line in wash. Inscription handwritten black pencil lower left corner reads, "Walker Hodgson / 10-5-95", and the name, "W.G. Grace" [underlined] is written in the lower right corner. Small window mount which is inscribed, "Good for scores of years / and years of 'scores', and / many 'centuries' yet." The object has been removed from its grey card, gold bevelled edge mount but the two items are housed together. Inscription stamped with purple ink on reverse centre reads, "WINDSOR & NEWTONS, / WATER COLOUR SKETCHING BOARDS. / Special Surface No. 1. [handwritten] / MADE IN ALL SIZES & SURFACES. / 38, RATHBONE PLACE, LONDON, ENGLAND.". Originally framed in black and gold frame with stickers t.l. " 4 "; and t.r. " 575". Verso labels: "Parker Gallery, London"; "Anthony Baer Collection 1962 / no.77 / [signed] Anthony Baer". Also exhibition label, "Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield / July 1955 / Exhibition 'Two Centuries of Cricket Art' / title: W.G. Grace / artist: Walker Hodgson; cat. no. 77".
