Object Detail

Brief Description
Polished cricket ball with engraved silver shield mounted onto it.The ball was used in the South of England v Australia cricket match, at the Oval, in September 1884. It was the last match the Australians played on their 1884 tour of England, and it was presented to Frederick Spofforth for his outstanding bowling performance during that match. On the shield, game statistics surround the engraved image of an English gentleman presenting a victory wreath to the female personification of Australia. Spofforth's personal player statistics for the whole tour are also engraved. Inscription reads, "A PRESENT TO AUSTRALIA'S BOWLER. / AUSTRALIA / VERSUS / S ENGLAND / KENNINGTON OVAL WON BY AUSTRALIA. SEPTR. 11TH 12TH 13TH 1884 / ONE INNINGS & 5 RUNS / M.31 I.52 B.6344 R.2642 M.656 W.216 AVERAGE 12.231.". Despite what the inscription reads, the match concluded on the 12th September 1884, the third day of play was not needed.
