Object Detail
Brief Description
Small metal, circular badge with the relief profile portrait of a male and female in the centre. An inscription around the outer reads (transliterated from Russian Cyrillic script), "SPARTAKIADA NARODOV 1956 / SSSR". This translates as, "The People's Spartakiad 1956, USSR". The Soviet athlete who originally owned this badge would have been presented with it in mid 1956 during the 1956 Spartakiad. The Spartakiad was an athletic competition of the USSR, held in Moscow in the summer before every Olympic Games. Spartakiad champions went on to participate in the following Olympiad. On the back are engraved three Russian letters 'M M D' meaning 'Moskovskiy Monetniy Dvor', or "Moscow [Federal] Mint".
