Object Detail

Brief Description
Postcard of a poster. Three chevrons, red, white, and blue, symbolising the U.S. national colours also represent the mountains around the host city. These join the vertical lines of a stylised Ionic column on the left, harking back to the ancient Games. Crowning the column are the Olympic rings. The curve of the two lower rings nestle into the double-dip at the top of the column. This feature symbolises a double Olympic cauldron, commemorating the current and previous Games already held in Lake Placid in 1932. Designed by Robert W. Whitney. It was reproduced as a postcard by the I.O.C. in 1985.
