Object Detail

Brief Description
A postcard of a poster. Design depicts the uppermost section of an ancient Roman column. The capital of the column is derived from the "Belvedere" capital, now located in the Vatican, but originally a part of the 3rd century A.D. Baths of Caracalla, in Rome. It depicts a naked male athlete, holding a victory palm in his left hand, whilst crowning himself with a victory wreath in his right hand. The people around him applaud. Inscription at the top of the capital reads: 'ROMA MCMLX'. Crowning the capital is a statue of the infant twins, Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, suckling the Capitoline she-wolf. The Olympic rings emblem is located above. Inscription, in French: 'JEUX DE LA XVII OLYMPIADE/ROMA 25.VIII-11.IX'. Poster was designed by Armando Testa. It was reproduced by the I.O.C. as a postcard in 1984.
