Object Detail

Brief Description
Postcard of a poster. Pictorial design features a young, ancient Athenian soldier, wearing only a chlamys, or cloak, riding bareback on his bucking horse. This image is derived from a portion of the frieze on the 5th century B.C. Parthenon temple in the Acropolis of Athens. Below is an inscription, in Swedish, as if inscribed on a plinth, reading: 'XVI OLYMPIADENS/RYTTARTAVLINGAR/19 56/STOCKHOLM 10-17 JUNI'. "Ryttartavlingar" roughly means "Riding Competition", or in an Olympic context, "Equestrian Games". Designed by John Sjosvard. It was reproduced by the I.O.C. as a postcard in 1984.
