Object Detail

Brief Description
Postcard of a poster. The poster was based on a clay sculpture which was photographed, and then coloured via lithography. It features a modern athlete holding up a long laurel chain, calling out to the world about the Los Angeles Games. It harks back to the ancient Greek custom of sending a warrior to announce the celebration of the next Olympiad, and to request the cessation of war. Inscription: 'OLYMPIC GAMES/JULY 30 1932 AUGUST 14/CALL TO/THE GAMES/OF THE/XTH OLYMPIAD/LOS ANGELES/CALIFORNIA'. The Olympic rings emblem features at the bottom. Designed by Julio Kilenyi, this poster was reproduced as a postcard by the I.O.C. in 1983.
