Object Detail

Brief Description
Postcard of a poster. Design is a pictorial image featuring an alpine scene, with a bridge and a forest, and Mont Blanc in the distance. In the right foreground is a 5-man bob sleigh team about to turn a bend. Above is an eagle, clasping in its claws a victory wreath and two victory palms tied by a blue and red ribbon. Inscription: 'PARIS - LYON - MEDITERRANEE/AUX VAINQUEURS DU CONCOURS DE LA VIII OLYMPIADE/CHAMONIX.MONT-BLANC/25 Janvier-5 Fevrier 1924'. Part of the inscription, translated, reads: 'The champions of the competition of the 8th Olympiad...'. The Games of the 8th Olympiad, in Paris, were held later in 1924. The International Winter Sports Week at Chamonix, which was sponsored by the I.O.C., seems to have originally been seen as a lead up to the Paris Olympics. It was so successful, however, it was retroactively named the inaugural Olympic Winter Games. Poster designed by Auguste Matisse. It was reproduced as a postcard by the I.O.C. in 1983.
