Object Detail

Brief Description
Postcard of a poster. The 1900 Paris Olympic Games was incorporated within the Exposition Universelle Internationale, or, Paris World Fair. Furthermore, the Games competitions were actually individual "physical exercise" and "sports" competitions, or 'Concours d'Exercices physiques et de Sports'. This poster is actually for the 1900 International Fencing Competition, or 'Concours Internationaux d'Escrime', which constituted the 1900 Olympic Games fencing programme. The illustration features a female fencer holding out a foil, sword, and sabre with her right hand, whilst holding her safety helmet with her left. Designed by Jean de Paleologu, or 'PAL', this poster was reproduced as a postcard by the I.O.C. in 1983.
