Object Detail

Brief Description
Colour lithographic print of an eighteenth-century cricket match. The artist/engraver is Lawrence Josset, the printer is Thos. Ross & Son and the print edition is 88/375. It is a copy of an engraving from 1743 by Charles Grignion after a painting by Francis Hayman. The print depicts a cricket match played on a field surrounded by trees and hedges. Seventeen figures appear including two batsmen, two umpires, eleven fielders and two spectators. The bowler is delivering the ball underarm and the batsmen and umpires carry curved bats. The fielders wear stockings, breeches and waistcoats, while the umpires and spectators wear long coats and tricorn hats. This reproduction is almost identical to the original except for changes to the background. Below the image is written "88/375 / A Cricket Match in Mary-le-Bone Fields, 1740 / Lawrence Josset", and there is an embossed mark of the printer - Thos. Ross & Son. The item is housed in a beige-coloured mount.
