Object Detail

Brief Description
Original Robert Ingpen watercolour depicting Australian Rules footballer, Norm Smith (1915-1973), in the Melbourne Football Club colours. The artist's image number - 71 - and subject's name and club are handwritten below the design. A sheet of tracing paper, with grid lines and references, folds over the artwork which is signed and dated by the artist. The image is included in a tapestry celebrating 150 years of performances and events on the MCG. Smith played 210 games and kicked 546 goals for Melbourne (1935-48) and later coached the club (1952-67). During this period, Melbourne reached 11 consecutive finals series, and won six premierships from eight Grand Finals. Smith had briefer stints at Fitzroy FC as captain-coach (1949-50) and then non-playing coach (1951), and at South Melbourne FC as coach (1969-72).
