Object Detail

Brief Description
Original Robert Ingpen watercolour depicting Australian Rules footballer, Albert Edward "Bert" Chadwick (1897-1983). The artist's image number - 52 - and subject's name and club are handwritten below the design, with the pencilled years '1920-28', and notation 'CHAIRMAN MCC 1950-62'. A sheet of tracing paper, with grid lines and references, folds over the artwork which is signed and dated by the artist. The image is included in a tapestry celebrating 150 years of performances and events on the MCG. Chadwick played 142 games for Melbourne Football Club (1920-28), was Captain-Coach (1924-27), captained Victoria in 10 of his 19 appearances, and took on the Hawthorn coaching job in an honorary capacity in 1929. He was chairman of the Melbourne FC (1950-62) and president of the Melbourne Cricket Club (1965-79), and knighted in 1974.
