Object Detail
Brief Description
Robert Ingpen's watercolour image of Australian Rules footballer, Ted Whitten (1933 - 1995). The artist's image number - 106 - and subject's name and club are handwritten below the design, with the name - 'I.JENKIN' - the North Melbourne player in the image. A sheet of tracing paper, with grid lines and references, folds over the artwork which is signed and dated by the artist. The image is included in a tapestry celebrating 150 years of performances and events on the MCG. Whitten played 321 games (then a league record) and kicked 360 goals for the Footscray Football Club between 1951 and 1970. He played in their only premiership side in 1954, was club Best & Fairest five times, represented Victoria 29 times, and was All-Australian three times. He was a strong promoter of interstate games. Whitten is described by many as 'Mr Football'.
