Object Detail

Brief Description
Robert Ingpen's original design of an image of West Indian all-rounder, Gary Sobers. The artist's original image number - 114 - and name of the subject and team are handwritten below the design, with the pencilled years '1953-74'. A sheet of tracing paper, with the grid references, folds over the artwork which is signed and dated by the artist. The image is included in a tapestry celebrating 150 years of performances and events on the MCG. In 93 Tests, Sobers scored 8,032 runs at an average of 57.78 (including 26 centuries), captured 235 wickets at 34.03, and held 109 catches. In 1975, Sobers was knighted for his services to cricket. In 2000, he was selected as one of Wisden's Five Cricketers of the [20th] Century.
