Brief Description
1996 Centenary of Modern Olympics relay torch. A metallic bowl atop a ribbed metallic shaft, tapering off to a wooden handle, mounted onto a wooden base. In between the ribbed shaft and wooden handle is a metallic band. Inscribed into the band are the names of all the Olympic cities from 1896-1996, in ancient Greek script. An inscription on a plastic label, mounted onto the base, reads, "100 YEARS ANNIVERSARY AND RE-ENACTMENT OLYMPIC GAMES 1896-1996 / PRESENTED TO / AUSTRALIAN GALLERY OF SPORT / OLYMPIC MUSEUM / CELEBRATING THE RE-ENACTMENT OF THE LIGHTING OF THE 1956 OLYMPIC TORCH / AT THE MELBOURNE CRICKET GROUND, 21ST APRIL, 1996 AND IN APPRECIATION OF / THE SERVICE TO THE AUSTRALIAN OLYMPIC MOVEMENT.".
