Object Detail

Brief Description
'Worlds Records Holder' plaque awarded by the International Amateur Athletic Federation to each of the members of the world-record-breaking, gold-medal winning Australian women's 4x100 metre relay team at the 1956 Olympic Games. The plaque is bronze, inscription on obverse reads: "IAAF/ INTERNATIONAL/ AMATEUR ATHLETIC/ FEDERATION", below an image of a winged lady standing on a globe. The reverse reads "INTERNATIONAL/ AMATEUR ATHLETIC/ FEDERATION/ TO/[engraved & highlighted in white enamel] AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL TEAM/ (S.B. DE LA HUNTY,/ N. CROKER,/ F. MELLOR,/ B. CUTHBERT)/ WORLDS RECORDS HOLDER/ 4X 100 METRES RELAY/ 44.5 S./ 1.12.1956/ MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA". This is one of 2 plaques owned by Shirley Strickland that are identical in all but the times: this one reads '44.5 s' while the other reads '44.9 s'. This is very similar to 2 other plaques owned by Shirley Strickland related to the same event.
