Brief Description
Gold medal awarded to Shirley Strickland as a member of the winning Australian women's 4x 100 metres relay team at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. This was one of 2 medals won by Strickland at these Games, including a gold medal for the 80 metres hurdles. ' XVITH/ OLYMPIAD/ MELBOURNE/ 1956' is debossed on the obverse of the medal, next to an image of a lady cradling a sheaf of wheat, holding a laurel wreath above her head. The reverse features an image of a naked young man being hoisted on the shoulders of a crowd of other young men. Medal has a ring soldered onto the upper edge, attached to which is another small ring.
