Brief Description
Gold medal awarded to Shirley Strickland for first place in the 80 metre hurdles at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. This was one of 2 medals won by Strickland at these Games, along with another gold as a member of the with the women's 4x100 m relay team. 'XVITH/ OLYMPIAD/ MELBOURNE/ 1956' debossed on obverse, next to an image of a lady cradling a sheaf of wheat, holding a laurel wreath above her head. The reverse features an image of a naked young man being hoisted on the shoulders of a crowd of other young men. "Shirley Strickland 80 METRE H." engraved around edge.
