Brief Description
Bronze-coloured participation medal presented to Shirley Strickland as a member of the Australian Olympic Team at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. Strickland won 2 gold medals at these games, in the 80 m hurdles and with the women's 4x100 m relay team. The obverse of the medal features a debossed design of Olympic Rings, a shield with a kangaroo on top, and decorative leaves, with "OLYMPIC GAMES MELBOURNE 1956" around the upper edge. The reverse features a debossed design of pairs of figures walking around the circumference, heads towards the centre, with "CITIUS ALTIUS FORTIUS" engraved around the Olympic Flag in the centre.
