Brief Description
Gold medal awarded to Shirley Strickland for winning the women's 80 metres hurdles at the 1950 British Empire Games. This medal was one of four won by Strickland at these Games, including a gold in the women's 220 x 110 x 220 x 110 yards relay; a silver in the 220 yards and another silver in the 100 yards. 'BRITISH EMPIRE GAMES/ 1950' debossed on obverse, around an image of a helmeted winged lady holding aloft a laurel wreath with her right hand, and a trident held in her left. The reverse features leaves and flowers around the edge, with a small map of New Zealand inside a laurel wreath at the bottom. Engraved in the centre is 'WOMEN/ 80 METRES HURDLES/ S. STRICKLAND/ AUSTRALIA.'
