Brief Description
1986 'First Earth Run' Global Torch Relay torch used during the Melbourne leg of the around-the-world relay to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of UNCEF. Comprises a copper bowl atop a long, cylindrical brass handle. Highlights of the Melbourne leg included the passing of the torch to footballing celebrities Paul Salmon and John Platten, ultra marathon runner Cliff Young, and to Australian Olympian Herb Elliott, who carried it from St. Paul's Cathedral to the Melbourne Cricket Ground, ahead of Pope John Paul II who was touring Australia at the time. Around the base of the bowl is the repeated logo: 'ANZ BANK'.
