Object Detail

Brief Description
A polished cricket ball with an engraved shield mounted onto it. Inscription reads: 'Presented by/MELB. CRICKET CLUB/TO/S.F. BARNES/1ST TEST MATCH/6 Wickets for 141 runs/ENGLAND WON BY/AN INNINGS & 124 RUNS'. The 1st Test in Sydney, from 13-16 Dec. 1901, was the first Test Barnes played in Australia. The inscription provides his overall bowling performance, but his 1st innings figures were an impressive 5/65. The ball was probably presented to Barnes by the M.C.C. after the English team arrived in Melbourne for the 2nd Test in Jan. 1902.
