Object Detail

Brief Description
Original Robert Ingpen watercolour entitled 'DON BRADMAN RETIRES'. The artist's image number - 78 - title, and year - 1948 - are handwritten below the design. A sheet of tracing paper, with grid lines and references, folds over the artwork which is signed and dated by the artist. The image is included in a tapestry celebrating 150 years of performances and events on the MCG. Following the 1948 tour of England, Bradman played a testimonial match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Bradman and Hassett captained the two teams of the best players in the country - and Bradman made 123, his 117th first-class century. In 1949, Bradman was knighted for his services to cricket; in 1996 he was an inaugural inductee into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame; and, in 2000 he was named as the first among Wisden's Five Cricketers of the 20th Century.
