Brief Description
Pocket watch and blue velvet case. The gold-cased pocket watch was presented to Frank Laver to commemorate his record breaking 352 not out score in a club game between East Melbourne and St Kilda cricket clubs in February 1893. The watch opens to display a white watch face with an inset seconds dial. From the right hand edge protrudes the winding mechanism, which also can be depressed to open the face, and is attached to a ring intended for a chain. On the reverse side, the gold case opens to reveal an beautifully hand-chiselled engraved inscription which reads, "PRESENTED TO FRANK LAVER / BY A FEW EMCC FRIENDS / ON HIS SCORING 352 NOT OUT / THE AUSTRALIAN RECORD / FEBRUARY / 1893". The maker's name is on the watch face, and reads A.W. Co/WALTHAM/MASS, and the marks on the inner case read 10C AB 1810 (10-carat gold). Watch case: Blue velvet covered jewellery box, with yellow and cream velvet inner, and yellow velvet covered insert, designed to house a wrist watch [but apparently housed the pocket watch].
