Object Detail

Brief Description
Original Robert Ingpen watercolour depicting Australian Rules footballer (and Test cricketer), David Bertram Miller "Dave" Smith (1884-1963). The artist's image number - 37 - and subject's name and club are handwritten below the design, with the pencilled year '1911'. A sheet of tracing paper, with grid lines and references, folds over the artwork which is signed and dated by the artist. The image is included in a tapestry celebrating 150 years of performances and events on the MCG. Smith played 142 games and kicked 111 goals for the Essendon Football Club (1903-11, 1913) including the 1911 Premiership, and one game for the Richmond FC (1914). He played two Tests for Australia in England in 1912, scoring 30 runs in three innings.
