Object Detail

Brief Description
Pale green, cotton singlet with RAAF blue felt crest sewn to the front. The crest features a crown above an oval with Latin motto 'PER ARDUA AD ASTRA', and a hawk with outstretched wings across the centre, with text that reads 'ROYAL AUSTRALIAN AIR FORCE' on a flowing banner. The singlet was worn by Hubert Opperman, Australian Cyclist, when he ran for the RAAF in a modified marathon event in the Track Championships of the Australian Fighting Forces at the MCG in 1940. Opperman withdrew at about the ten mile mark of the 12 mile event because of a pulled leg muscle.
