Brief Description
Monochrome engraving of English women cricketers covering two pages of the 24 May 1890 edition of the "Illustrated London News". The image (pp.656-7) gives a close-up, side-on view of the wicket, showing a wicket keeper, five fielders and batswoman. A male umpire stands at square leg. Spectators line the boundary on the far side of the pitch, where there is a pavilion, trees and houses beyond. The image is bordered by a thin black line, below which is the title "THE ENGLISH LADY CRICKETERS: MISS STANLEY BATTING". On the reverse of the page are various articles including one titled "THE LADY CRICKETERS" (p.655), describing the "social novelty" of women's cricket in the late-nineteenth century.
