Brief Description
Unframed, window-mounted photograph of The Ashes urn on a low, tiered circular base. Printed text on the grey card mount includes the epitaph from the Sporting Times: 'IN AFFECTIONATE REMEMBRANCE/ OF/ ENGLISH CRICKET,/ Which Died at the Oval on/ 29th August, 1882,/ DEEPLY LAMENTED BY A LARGE CIRCLE OF/ Sorrowing friends and/ Acquaintances./ R.I.P./ N.B. The body will be Cremated and the Ashes Taken to Australia'. The text also notes that 'In the following year, when the third Test had been won by England in Australia, the stumps were burned, and the Ashes sealed in/ a casket, which was presented by Melbourne ladies to the English/ captain, Hon. Ivo Bligh ... '.
