Brief Description
A casual group portrait, taken in 1924, of past and present English captains, exclusively those who captained the English cricket team during tours to South Africa, which began in 1905-06. Inscription on front: 'F.T. Mann, H.D.G. Leveson Gower, J.W.H.T. Douglas, P.J. Warner/-the four captains of the M.C.C. teams in South Africa/Presented to the Melbourne C.C. p[...]ion/by EW Ballantine 1924'. Inscription on back: 'Captains of M.C.C. teams in South/Africa. The first official side to/tour S.Africa was in 1905-6/P.J. Warner 1905-6/HDG Leveson Gower 1909-10/JWHT Douglas 1913-14/F.T. Mann 1922-23./E[...]W Ballantine'.
