Brief Description
Posed studio head and shoulders portrait of a male within an oval setting. The male - wearing a jacket, vest and tie - has a neat moustache and short hair parted in the middle. A panel at the foot of the photograph bears text that reads 'Bardwell/ INSTANTANEOUS PHOTOGRAPHS/ 21 COLLINS STREET EAST, MELBOURNE'. The photograph is of English all-rounder, Willie 'Billy' Bates, who played 15 Tests for England in the 1880s, scoring 656 runs and taking 50 wickets. He was forced to retire after being hit in the eye during practice whilst on tour in Australia. The Melbourne Cricket Club began an appeal for funds to assist him.
