Object Detail

Brief Description
Framed reproduction on board of a painting of a nineteenth-century cricket match in play on a large field being viewed by many spectators. Inscription below image printed by hand in black ink reads, "THE FIRST CRICKET MATCH PLAYED BY THE ALL-ENGLAND ELEVEN AND EIGHTEEN OF VICTORIA. / ON THE MELBOURNE CRICKET GROUND 1ST 2 3 & 4TH JANY 1862". Below are listed the names of the players of the respective teams and the umpires. Also printed in very small writing beneath the left side of the image, mostly indecipherable due to the fading of the original work, is an inscription reading something like 'DRAWN FROM ...?... AND ON STONE BY C.C. CLARKE(?) ...' Large gum trees surround the periphery of the ground; men and women stand on grass in the foreground including on horses and in buggies; a tent and small signposts are also on the field; much detail of the advertising around the ground can be deciphered, including 'J.E. BRYANT & ROWLEY' and 'SPIERS & POND', and several hotels on the edge of the ground, including 'SAVILL & GEO MARSHALL'S CRICKETER'S HOTEL', 'CAMERON'S CANADA HOTEL', and the 'ODD FELLOWS' ARMS HOTEL'. The MCC flag can be seen at top right in front of a double-gabled building. Beneath the reproduction and affixed to the yellow mount is a sticker reading, 'TRANS-AUSTRALIA AIRLINES'. Light-coloured wood frame.
