Brief Description
Chromolithograph of four Surrey and England cricketers of the mid-nineteenth century. The men are shown full length, all wearing whites, neckerchiefs and hats. Each is striking a different pose - holding a ball, putting on gloves, taking stance in front of stumps and arms folded - and all are facing straight ahead. The scene is set outdoors, with a simple landscape and a marquee in the background. The four cricketers - Sherman, Caesar, Caffyn and Lockyer, are named below the image, and under that is the title "SKETCHES OF THE SURREY CRICKETERS". Immediately below the image l.l., printed 'John C. Anderson del et lith.'; immediately below the image l.r., printed 'Printed by R. Black, Red Lion Court, Fleet Street.'. Under the title, centre printed 'London, Published 16th July 1852, by John Corbet Anderson, 40, Church Road, De Beauvoir Square, Kingsland, and Frederick Lillywhite, No.10, Princes Terrace, Caledonian Road, Islington.'. Verso reg number inscribed bottom left and also in pencil " 2107".
