Object Detail

Brief Description
Black and white print of a drawing titled "The Deluge" from original work by artist and illustrator Hablot Knight Browne who used the pseudonym 'Phiz'. The work is largely executed in shades of grey, featuring three boys with a cricket bat and ball being hit in the face by a stream of water from a rainwater barrel, while a fourth boy ducks, upsetting a water pail and jug. A group of women and girls stand in the doorway of a laundry, looking on and smiling. A handwritten inscription in the lower LH corner reads THE DELUGE, and the artist's signature sits in the lower RH corner. THE DELUGE/ PHIZ C 1850 has been written onto the lower edge of the mount. Cream windowmount with 5-line border to give the illusion of depth, black and gold wooden frame.
