Object Detail

Brief Description
Large framed oleographic reproduction (print made to look like an original) of a 1797 oil painting by Jean François Sablet, depicting a gentleman in white ruffled shirt, and black vest and stockings, holding an early, curved cricket bat, standing on an open field. He stands in front of a very low set of three stumps. To the left and behind stands a man holding open a very large black sack; three other figures also stand nearby. Small plaque attached to lower edge of frame reads THOMAS HOPE OF AMSTERDAM / PRESENTED TO MELBOURNE CRICKET CLUB BY THE MARYLEBONE CRICKET CLUB. Wooden frame with grey and gold painted inner edge. Label on reverse certifies the print as a reproduction.
