Brief Description
Chromolithograph depicting a cricket match being played on the grounds of Aldeburgh school in Suffolk. The players wear long-sleeved shirts and pants, some wear vests, many wear caps; the batter at the bowler's end wears a long overcoat and black 'beaver' hat. The bowler is about to bowl underarm. A number of male and female spectators stand around the ground in front of tall trees and the yellow, two-story wooden school building, which has a flagpole with a Union Jack in front. Inscription on the same paper as the image, beneath the image, reads in part: 'RETURN CRICKET MATCH, BETWEEN THE VISITORS AND SCHOOL, AUGUST 31ST, 1864. / SCORE 96 - 109. / IN DISTANCE, THE VALE OF SLAUGHDEN, RIVER ALDE, AND ORFORD LIGHT-HOUSES. / JUNIOR PUPILS' MATCH.' Printed immediately below the image l.l. "Drawn and published by Henry Davy, Globe Street, Ipswich, Sept. 1864. The main inscription, mounted in a separated paper panel insert beneath the lithograph reads: 'THE GRAMMAR SCHOOL, ALDEBURGH, SUFFOLK. / HEAD MASTER, THE REV. WILLIAM TATE, M.A.' Cream window mount; black and gold painted wood frame. Exhibition label stuck to the cardboard backing of verso and framer's label; also white security (?) label 'MS1223/M51223'.
