Brief Description
The Thames river in foreground, Eton College in background, the inscription is from Thomas Gray's 'Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College'. Colour lithograph depicting boys of various ages in an idyllic country setting, with large opulent building in the background. Group of four males at foreground right, three older boys wearing cloaks and holding texts and a young one holding a hoop and stick; four young boys in the river playing in and pulling a small boat; another four young boys playing in the middle ground; a group of 5 young boys playing in and around a boat in the water beyond; and a group of boys playing cricket further beyond. Inscription printed in decorative cursive script beneath image reads 'SAY FATHER THAMES, FOR THOU HAST SEEN / FULL MANY A SPRIGHTLY RACE, / DISPORTING ON THY MARGENT GREEN / THE PATHS OF PLEASURE TRACE.' Publisher Silvester and possible "J" . Cream window mount; black and gold painted wood frame.
