Object Detail

Brief Description
This water colour depicts a cricket match played in an open field. The match was between Surrey and All England at The Oval 27 August 1862. Featured are a number of players dressed in light trousers, coloured shirts and wearing a variety of hats and caps. Two umpires are dressed in dark hats and suits. A tent surrounded by large crowds of onlookers is pitched at the edge of the field and a large white building is in the background behind trees. Originally this watercolour (M6597) and an engraving of the same scene (M8630) were mounted and framed together. It is believed the watercolour was executed before the engraving.
