Brief Description
Colour painting of a gentleman in cricket whites, pads, and gloves, left-handed, standing at the crease in batting stance. In the background are a white screen to the right, and spectators seated under striped roofs. Signature of artist inscribed in the lower RH corner" L. A. Wilcox". Small sign affixed to lower edge of frame reads, "SIR GARFIELD SOBERS". Frame is gold-painted wood. Verso inscriptions and labels as follows: Handwritten in black pen on reverse of frame, left edge: "ANTHONY / BAER / COLLECTION / 19 / SOBERS / IS / THE / GREATEST / CRICKETER / OF / THE / DAY / I / COMMISSIONED / THIS / PAINTING / AND / SOBERS / SIGNED / IT [signature] A. Baer". Signature of Sobers is on the reverse of frame, upper edge "Garry Sobers", but has been partially obscured by an adhesive label with "13" in black pen. Written in white chalk on the canvas "390/3". There is a white security label l.r.c. written in pencil "MS1164" [or] "M51164".
