Brief Description
Framed oil on canvas portrait of English cricketer Douglas Jardine, shown half-length, wearing brown jacket, cardigan, shirt and tie. His head is slightly turned to give a three-quarter view. The background is a simple blue and white cloud effect. The style of the painting is slightly impressionistic, using thick application of paint and bold brushstrokes. The artist has signed and dated the work in red paint at the lower left: "H.M. JONES (H. M JAMES ?) / 28 (32?)"'. The canvas is housed in a thick, gilded wooden frame. An engraved metal plaque nailed to the frame beneath the image reads "D.R. JARDINE". Verso '1665' on backing board & inner frame. Also verso on frame label 'MS1172' or M51172'.
