Brief Description
Painting, oil-colour on canvas, surrounded by a heavy ornate gold-painted frame with plaster decorations. Painting is of an older man with white side-whiskers, wearing a red flopped-over cap, red scarf/tie, blue vest, beige pants, and a long light-coloured overcoat. He grips a bat with both hands, holding it out in front of himself. A wicket missing the left bail is visible behind him. Artist's signature and date l.l.c. "J. Hayllar/1885". Label attached to the frame reads: "A Brewer's Drayman/ as Cricketer/ J. Hayllar 1885". A typewritten label on the reverse of the frame reads: "Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield, July 1955 / Exhibition of Two Centuries of Cricket Art / Title - Brewer's Drayman/ A Cricketer / Artist - J. Hayllar no.9 / Sent by J.W. Goldman". A handwritten label, on the lower LH corner, reads, "THE CRICKETER (BAER COLLECTION) / J. HAYLLAR / 1885".
