Object Detail

Brief Description
Framed watercolour painting of a cricket match being played on a large field enclosed by a wall on one side and a building on the other. A number of spectators line the boundary. The wicket is seen side-on, and the stumps are very large in proportion to the cricketers. The players all wear cricket whites; some with black tail jackets and black top hats. Small blue, red and yellow tents line the periphery of the ground on the far side; a large building stands at the right of the field; and a town can be seen beyond the ground on the rolling hills, on which also stand two windmills. Signed at lower right, "J.C". Inscription in black ink at bottom of image reads, "ROYAL CRICKET GROUNDS, BRIGHTON". The painting is housed in a cream window mount and black and gold painted wooden frame. Inscription in blue biro on brown piece of paper affixed to verso reads, "ANTHONY BAER COLLECTION 1962 NO. 69/ (signature) A. Baer". Also on this paper is inscribed in the same hand, "SEE COLLECTION / NO. 464 / FOR PRINT OF THIS MATCH". Framer's label verso also.
