Object Detail

Brief Description
Unusual watercolour painting of the interior of a church. The pews are filled with parishioners, and a minister is speaking from the pulpit. Across the front of the church are ghostly 'visions', including a large figure of Christ floating in the centre of the aisle, and other subjects such as a wedding, a horse race, shooting and a cricket match. These presumably represent what the congregation are thinking about. The painting is signed and dated in the lower-right ("J.Gotley,1901"), and is housed in a green, card mount with foamcore backing.
