Object Detail

Brief Description
A circular lacquered wooden snuff box lid, featuring on top, a carved image of two crossed cricket bats with a ball between the handles. Beneath it are two men in top hats playing cricket - one is batting, the other bowling. Beneath the image is the word 'HAMBLEDEN (sic.)'. On the lid, in the space between the two players, is the barely legible inscription: 'Joe Wellington/1830'. A handwritten note inside the box featuring this name confirms the reading.
Hambledon, home of the Hambledon Cricket Club, was the "cradle" of modern cricket, with the first rules of cricket being instituted there in 1750. The circular box base is M6885.2. (Given size and circular shape this may be a tobacco box).
