Brief Description
Large polished wood shield with topmost plaque missing, the centrepiece and surrounding plaques all made of silver metal and pinned onto the wood. The centrepiece features decorative moulding around the edges and is engraved with inscription, "THE / HARTLEY SHIELD / TO BE WON 3 TIMES / NOT NECESSARILY / IN / SUCCESSION / 1929". Surrounding this inscription are the names, "PRESIDENT / F.W. CARDINER; HON. SECRETARY / W.J.MCDONNELL; HON. TREASURER / T.W. MORRISH; and MINUTE SECRETARY / W.E. GALLAGHER". Ten small shields are pinned around the centrepiece, only five of which have been engraved, "RICHMOND F.C. / 2ND 18 / PREMIERS / 1929 / J. MCDOUGALL/ SEC.; GEELONG F.C. / 2ND 18 / CHAMPIONS / 1930 / A.E. FLEMING / SEC.; MELBOURNE F.C./ 2ND 18 / PREMIERS / 1931 / A. HOWE / SEC.; MELBOURNE F.C./ 2ND 18 / PREMIERS / 1932 / H.L. STANLEY/ DELEGATE; MELBOURNE F.C./ 2ND 18 / PREMIERS / 1933 / S.A. BROWNEILL / CHAIRMAN". A silver plaque attached beneath the centrepiece features a football at centre, on which has been engraved, "WON OUTRIGHT / BY MELBOURNE F.C. 2ND 18 / 1933".
