Brief Description
Large, heavy polished wood shield/trophy featuring ornate silver metal attachments and black and silver columns on either side. Engraving on plaque at top in the form of a flowing banner reads VICTORIAN CRICKET ASSOCIATION. Raised oval centrepiece features elaborately engraved inscription reading PENNANT / PREMIERSHIP / SEASON, 1896-97 / WON BY THE / M.C.C., below which is depicted an image of a cricketer batting. Below this is attached an elaborate scrolled metalwork featuring the V.C.A. emblem at centre in blue enamel. Engraved on silver metal strips attached to the black enamel columns at either side are the names of the members of the team, from left-right: C. MCLEOD / W. BRUCE / C.L. WILSON / C.H. ROSS / R. GREENE / A.A. AITKEN / P.G. JENNINGS / J. McC. BLACKHAM / C.H. PERYMAN / A.E. STEPHEN / A.E. JOHNS / M.F. DAWKINS / H. GRAHAM / H. TRUMBLE / C.B. MOYSEY / A.J. FIGGS / W. ROCHE / J. O'HALLORAN / J. LEITH / H. FRY. Decoratively carved wood scroll at bottom; black enamel acorn shape at top.
